I am super in love with my workshop.

Catherine Granche, Quebec artist and designer of contemporary jewelry.

I love being in my studio, even doing nothing. Cleaning my workshop is a pain when everything is clean. After a project like this, I cleaned up my workshop before leaving. There is no longer the mess, there is no longer the creation that is there. There is no longer this chaos which means that there is always something appearing. But creation is everywhere.

Born in Montreal into a family that loves the arts with a sculptor father and a gallery owner mother, Catherine Granche has a degree in theater arts. She worked as a scenographer for 10 years for different theater companies, then she turned to horticulture, drawing landscapes. Then, in 2011, she enrolled at the Montreal Jewelry School. Her contemporary jewelry brings together all of her previous careers and the subjects that fascinate her. To create her jewelry, she has two mediums of expression: silver and ceramic.

Contemporary jewelry

Before, I drew a lot to find ideas or express the thoughts that came up. I started playing with the clay directly to find shapes, but I think that’s where this idea came from that instead of drawing, I could also model. It was something I had never done before. I also began to be passionate about things that tarnish, age or mature. Silver tarnishes. It’s a bit like fruit that will ripen, porcelain that dries out and can re-wet so that it becomes malleable again. These are two materials that seemed to me to go together, while the majority of people told me “Well no, we can’t wear porcelain jewelry because it’s fragile” for all sorts of reasons. When we put porcelain or ceramic in our dishwasher every day, it’s solid. »

Then there was also all the sensuality of the material. Silver is a material, for me, which has an absolutely extraordinary color, precisely because it will develop a patina over time. Just as ceramic material is also something absolutely fascinating. It’s very sensual, it can be as coarse as super fine like Chinese porcelain. »

The jewel for Catherine Granche is an artistic expression, a relationship with the body and with others with a certain state of mind.

I think I kept my adolescent spirit where I refused the dictates of society. My jewelry is still quite imposing, so I kind of refused to make jewelry that was easily wearable. There is this idea there too. I think it’s a slight provocation, let’s say. »

As with the subjects too where it’s always a little subversive because I made brooches for example, where I molded oranges by putting a skin pink pigment and so it looks like a breast which is finally cold. So there’s always this look when I wear this brooch, in particular, people look at me like “But it’s a breast “. It’s your mind that is there that comes to hijack the thing, because no, it’s an orange, it’s just that it’s pink. And in fact, it must be me who has the mind misplaced, but who seeks it in others. »
