“He was an honest, principled man, as Pope in a difficult place in a difficult time,” says Christiaan Veldman, curator of the exhibition in Utrecht. The church was also in bad shape at the time, mainly due to clergy misconduct, and reformers wanted renewal. The good, sober Adrianus, according to Veldman a real peacemaker, tried in vain to prevent the church split that followed.
