At the end of the last century, De Haar Castle was in increasingly deteriorating condition. Because the foundation was not stable, the castle showed cracks. After centuries of private ownership, Baron van Zuylen decided to transfer the ownership of the castle (and the surrounding park) into a foundation. In this way restorations could be carried out.
Since then, the restoration of the castle and the outbuildings has cost about 40 million euros. According to the website of Kasteel de Haar, 70 percent of those costs are covered by the government. The rest comes from our own resources, with some contributions from the Van Zuylen family and other private funds.
The Châtelet, which the family can still use today, also had to be renovated. Thanks to a ‘champion subsidy’ from the government, contributions from the province of Utrecht and a number of funds, the necessary 3 million euros were collected.
