Is “The Breakthrough” on Netflix about the double murder in Linköping?
Yes, “The Breakthrough” on Netflix will depict the rewritten, and long unsolved, double murder in Linköping that occurred on October 19, 2004.
In the drama series, viewers get to follow a police chief and a genealogist who team up to identify the perpetrator in the unsolved case with the help of genealogy and new DNA technology.
It took, in the real case, 16 years before the killer could be called in Daniel Nyqvistwho later admitted to stabbing eight-year-olds Mohammad Ammouri and 56-year-olds Anna-Lena Svensson to death.

Daniel Nyqvist was sentenced, 16 years after the double murder in Linköping, to forensic psychiatric care. Is “Breakthrough” based on Peter Sjölund’s book?
The genealogist in the real case was Peter Sjölundwho together with the journalist Anna Bodin wrote the book “The Breakthrough: How the genealogist solved the double murder in Linköping” in 2022. It is this book that is also largely the basis of the Netflix series “The Breakthrough”.
– When I read the book “The breakthrough” I was struck by the fact that behind this gigantic murder investigation there were such strong human destinies. Police officers who refuse to give up, relatives who want answers to questions and not least the genealogist who finally came up with the solution, have Oskar Söderlundwho wrote the script for the series, said earlier in a comment to The Express and then continued:
– It is a terrible trauma that affects the people and the city of Linköping and I want to respectfully tell about the attempts to move on from such a trauma. Because in the midst of tragedy there are people who refuse to give up, who fight to be able to move on and whose whole lives are marked by what happened.

In an episode of the Nyheter24 podcast “24 Questions”which will be released on January 6, Sjölund has told about when he himself was reached by the news of the double murder.
– I remember it very well. I had no connection whatsoever to Linköping, but was sitting in a car on the E4 on the way to some customer meeting in southern Sweden and then I heard about this on the radio. In those days, you didn’t hear much about so many violent crimes. It was a big event. And then there was a little boy and a middle-aged woman, who didn’t know each other at all, so it all felt strange.
The genealogist has been involved in the editing of the series and thinks that the project feels promising.
– It feels really exciting to see what they have put together.

Nordkvist plays the genealogist, who in the real case is Peter Sjölund. In “24 Questions”, the latter is asked how he thinks the actor behaves in the role:
– Great! I am impressed. He has even added a Northern dialect. And before I always wore a checkered shirt, and he just wears a checkered shirt. He really succeeds in portraying a slightly over-fanatic genealogist.
How much have you met?
– Not at all. I thought about it now: I have to book a lunch with him the next time I’m here (in Stockholm, ed. note). Of course we will see each other, replies Sjölund, who lives in Härnösand and therefore did not have the opportunity to meet Nordkvist.
