The dealers at Bares for Rares are real professionals. But even experienced art and jewelry experts can make mistakes. A particularly unfortunate dealer has to dig deep into his pockets for his bad purchase: In the end, his treasure turns out to be junk. The whole story is here.
Real gold, but poor condition: This bracelet has seen better days
In the Bares for Rares episode from April 3, 2022, you can see a real bad purchase: Unfortunately, dealer David Suppes completely misjudged it.
At first glance everything seems as usual: an older couple shows up at Bares for Rares and has a pretty gold bracelet with them. Expert Heide Rezepa-Zabel finds the piece of jewelry from the 50s or 60s attractive. However, she immediately asks poor condition: “But what you can also tell from the bracelet is that it was very loved.” The hinges have now been “worn away” and therefore there are visible gaps.
Nevertheless: The gold value is impressive: 980 euros. But since the piece is so worn, the expert’s estimate hardly goes beyond that: The bracelet could only fetch 1,000 euros.
Gambled: Cash for Rares dealers is offered far too high
Things couldn’t get off to a better start for the couple: the first bid from the dealers was 1,000 euros. Unfortunately, the dealers probably didn’t take a closer look at the condition of the piece. In the end, the bracelet goes to David Suppes for an impressive 1,200 euros. A dream for the sellers – the exact opposite for the dealer.
He will never be able to sell the piece for so much more than its estimated value, but he only found out when it was too late. In a video post on YouTube, David Suppes admits that he had no choice: Unfortunately, he had to have the piece of jewelry melted down.
He admits that this deal was a huge bust: “For the price, the bracelet was a kind of economic total loss.”
