The infection is caused by a special type of chlamydia bacteria found in bird feces. To become infected, it is enough to inhale contaminated dust or to have handled a bird feeder.

Birds can carry parrot disease without developing symptoms, but pass the infection on to other birds and people.

For humans, the disease manifests itself as a flu with symptoms such as muscle aches. But you can also get more severe pneumonia. If you are really unlucky, you can suffer from encephalitis.

  • Choose a bird feeder that is easy to clean
  • Clean your bird feeder thoroughly at regular intervals
  • Keep the ground under the bird feeder as clean as possible
