The Covid-19 epidemic has cast a harsh light on the French health system. Overcrowded public hospitals that can no longer retain their caregivers, territories where there are no doctors for consultation or vaccination. Many French people live in what are called medical deserts. Vocation problem especially for general medicine, new personal aspirations of caregivers, but above all very poor distribution of graduates in France.
Peri-urban areas and rural areas are the most affected by medical deserts. The department of Nièvre, south-east of Paris, has 110 general practitioners per 100,000 inhabitants. One of the lowest densities in France. The county council is obliged to show ingenuity to try to attract caregivers to it, whatever their specialty.
