Oum biography
Originally from Casablanca, Oum El Ghaït Ben Essahraoui was first destined for architecture before choosing to embrace a career in music. She then attracted the attention of the media, which assimilated her to Nayda, a movement of young Moroccan musicians attracted by more urban sounds. Released in Morocco only, the albums Lik’Oum (2009) and Sweerty (2012) raise her to the rank of star in her country. An important click then takes place. The author and composer begins to write for the first time in Darija, a common Moroccan Arabic dialect. It is for her the possibility of exploiting a new musicality in words, as well as new combinations of meaning, a whole poetry of assonances. In 2013, she surrounded herself with music stars to publish her first international album, Soul of Morocco. The European public discovers a generous artist who achieves an unprecedented fusion of great authenticity. The concerts follow one another, allowing the close-knit group to gain even more cohesion. Two years later, Zarabi, recorded at the gates of the Sahara, deepens the aesthetic orientation favored by Oum, while carrying a discourse on the need to preserve nature and traditional microsocieties.
Presentation of the album Halls released in 2022 by MDC / Believe:
For HallsOum and M-Carlos have chosen to let themselves be overwhelmed by the states that have been going through us for some time, to deliver a show in 7 acts.
Beyond the desire, the need here is to put to music the emotions that have inhabited each and everyone in the first period of suspense that the world will have experienced in March 2020.
7 proposals, and as many rhythms and moods, sometimes haunting, sometimes hard-hitting, like 7 chapters of the human, or like an emotional fresco created with four hands to make the indescribable tangible: fear, desire, confusion, acceptance, self-expression, dreams and empathy. Oum’s texts and melodies are supported by the groove of an electro atmosphere created by M-Carlos on saxophone and maschine.
