Carrefour is teaming up with Netflix to offer Carrefour Plus, a subscription allowing its customers to benefit from discounts on its products and access to the streaming service for only 5.99 euros per month.
Times are tough and, even though inflation has slowed, our purchasing power is far from out of the woods! Prices have soared – and they continue! – in almost all areas: subscriptions to streaming services, mobile and Internet plans, food, hygiene, transport, energy… We are not spared anywhere! Also, every commercial operation intended to reduce our bills a little is more than welcome. And this is the case of Carrefour Plus, a subscription offered by the number two major retailer in France in partnership with Netflix, the king of streaming. Since January 16, 2024, the brand’s customers can subscribe, in certain stores, to a package for 5.99 euros per month which allows them to benefit from a 10% reduction on more than 7,000 Carrefour products, delivery free from 60 euros of purchase and a Netflix subscription to the Standard formula with advertising. An unexpected alliance to say the least!
Carrefour Plus: an unexpected alliance with Netflix
The formula is rather interesting because, if you subscribe to the Standard subscription with advertising directly on the Netflix platform, you must pay 5.99 euros per month, the same amount as with Carrefour Plus, but without the promotions . If you wish, you can pay extra to access the other N rouge offers, namely 7.50 euros per month for the Standard subscription without advertising and 14 euros per month for the Premium subscription. Here again, the prices are identical to those charged by the American streaming giant, but always with additional promotions.
In the inflationary context, “we know that there are a lot of contractions in spending on cinema, holidays… We wanted to be able to provide an entertainment offering to our customers”explains Caroline Dassié, executive director within the Carrefour group, at Parisian. To subscribe to this subscription, you must either go through the Carrefour website and subscribe to Carrefour Plus, or buy a dedicated card in one of the 108 participating stores. Once the account is activated, reductions will be available upon presentation of the classic loyalty card in store, in hard copy or in a dematerialized version on a mobile phone.
Carrefour Plus: a limited-scale offer
For the moment, Carrefour Plus is being tested on a limited scale to see if it is of interest to consumers. So, you can only benefit from it in 108 participating stores, located in the Bordeaux and Rouen regions – not all of them deliver, however. The brand will study the impact of the offer on its sales until the end of the year – it hopes to attract 3% of its customers – before extending it to all of France from 2025 if the results are positive.
Carrefour is not its first attempt. The brand carried out a similar test in April 2021, still around Rouen, with a food subscription system offering 15% reductions on a selection of products. This resulted in increased customer visits while retaining them. “We observed one or two more visits to the store per month for subscribed customers, who were then less likely to go to other brands”, specifies Caroline Dassié. For its part, Netflix is seeking to attract new audiences, by convincing those who are hesitant to take the plunge. This initiative is reminiscent of the partnership established between Amazon Prime and Monoprix last June, which allows subscribers to benefit from Monopflix, a subscription formula which gives access to 10% reduction on food shopping and maintenance. and hygiene, free delivery from 50 euros of purchase and six months of subscription to Amazon Prime.
