Carolin Mål is one of the first to test having her groceries delivered to her home – with drones.
Torsby municipality has implemented a project where 10 families did not have to lug their food bags home – instead they came rushing home directly from the local store.
– I ordered flying breakfast the first day. There was bread, liver pate and coffee beanstells Carolin Mål in Efter fems Sverigesvepet.
Last week, ten families in Torsby were able to take part in the municipality’s project where they test delivering groceries with drones: From the local store directly to their homes. The idea of the project is that it will save emissions, increase service in sparsely populated areas and strengthen rural shops.
– I live quite a bit outside Torsby, in a village called Östmark, where it is incredibly exciting and important to be able to participate and test this, says Carolin Mål.
The families had to order home groceries of a maximum of two kilos by contacting the grocery store. The food items are packed and then hung up under the drone. Then the drone whizzes straight to the homes of those who ordered their groceries.
– The drone is flown by a pilot based in Norway. The pilot calls and says: “Now we’re on our way with your delivery, are you home?” Then you say: “Yes, it’s going well”. Then they call again when they approach our house and ask us to make sure it is safe on the ground. There must be no people or animals on the ground that could be harmed if something were to happen.
“Huge possibilities”
The drone hangs in the air and lifts the food down to a predetermined location in the recipient’s garden. The food items are tied down in a rope and unloaded by the pilot when the package is on the ground.
– Then they call and say: “Now it’s ok to go out and collect your delivery”. I ordered flying breakfast the first day. There was bread, liver pate and coffee beans. I have had a few more deliveries since then.
Does it sound like something you would benefit from in the future?
– I see a lot of possibilities with this, like food delivery with pizza on Saturday night or something like that. But the biggest area of use is certainly in home care, medicine deliveries for example. Where I live, we have been snowed in many times this winter, when you would have had to go outside. So there are absolutely huge uses for this.
