Over 60 Palestinians are said to have been killed in an Israeli airstrike on Bait Lahia in besieged northern Gaza.

Many of the victims are said to have been sleeping when Israel attacked during the night.

An entire residential area near Kamal Adwan Hospital was left in ruins in the attack early Thursday, Turkish news agency Anatolia reported, citing medical sources. Data from Anatolia and the Palestinian news agency Wafa, which reports to the Palestinian Authority in the occupied West Bank, claim that over 60 people have been killed.

According to Wafa, another 100 people are said to be injured.

Kamal Adwan Hospital director Hussam Abu Safia told Qatar-based Al Jazeera that most of the victims were sleeping when the Israeli attack took place.

– A very large number of victims have arrived here, but many bodies are still hanging from walls and ceilings.

According to Abu Safia, most of the victims are women and children.

– We cannot handle such a large number of injured and killed, he tells Al Jazeera.

Rescue work continues after the attack. Due to the lack of formal emergency services in Bait Lahia, besieged by Israel since six weeks ago, hospital staff are pulling the dead out of the crowds with their own hands, writes Wafa.
