The grand slam victory is the first of Carlos Alcaraz’s career. The Spaniard defeated Norway’s Casper Ruud in the final of the US Open.
of Spain Carlos Alcaraz has defeated Norway in the men’s singles final of the US Open tennis tournament Casper Ruudin. 19-year-old Alcaraz covered Ruud in New York 6–4, 2–6, 7–6 (7–1), 6–3.

In order to reach the final, Alcaraz had spent more than five hours in the quarter-finals and more than four hours in the semi-finals. Despite the two five-sets, the young Spaniard had time to get back into top form for the final day.
The grand slam victory is the first of Alcaraz’s career, and thanks to it, he becomes the first player in the ATP world rankings as the youngest player of all time. He has quickly become the number one player in the world: at the end of 2020, he was ranked 141 in the world.
– Since I was a child, I have dreamed of being number one in the world rankings and a grand slam winner. I have worked really hard for this. It’s hard to even talk right now because my emotions are coming to the surface, Alcaraz rejoiced at the award ceremony.
Rafael Nadal praised: “I’m sure there will be many more of these”
Alcaraz is the youngest grand slam winner since his compatriot Rafael Nadal sensational victory in the 2005 French Open final. Nadal, still playing at the top, was also 19 years old at the time.
At the US Open, Alcaraz is the youngest winner since he was 19 years old Pete Sampras and the year 1990.
– I am only 19 years old. I have made all the difficult decisions with the help of my family and team. This win is special for me, Alcaraz said.
The young Spaniard has already been compared to the 36-year-old Rafael Nadal. Nadal, who has won 22 grand slams in his career, congratulated Alcaraz on Twitter.
– Congratulations on your first grand slam and world number one ranking, which is the culmination of your first great season. I’m sure there will be many more, Nadal wrote and added encouraging words to Casper Ruudi at the end.
Alcaraz has won four ATP tournaments this season, including the ATP Masters 1000 tournaments in Madrid and Miami. In the Miami final, he just defeated Ruud.
For Casper Ruud, the Spanish final opponents have proven difficult, as he lost to Rafael Nadal in the French Open final in the summer. The top successes of the season, however, raise the 23-year-old Norwegian from seventh place to second place in the ATP ranking.
