Car has sunk – driven off ferry in Norrtälje

The incident occurred when boarding the ferry and a major rescue operation was launched. The car had sunk and both boats, divers and an ambulance helicopter took part in the operation.

At 6:30 p.m., the Swedish Maritime Administration announced that two people had been found and taken to hospital by helicopter.

– Two people have been picked up from the water and the car has been searched, says Jonas Franzen.

Later in the evening, the police announced that their lives could not be saved. According to the police, there were no other people in the car.

– We will write a report about negligence in traffic and one about causing the death of another. The suspect is deceased in both cases, we do not know who drove the car, says Mats Eriksson, press spokesperson and adds:

– This is done because you have to investigate, you have to have a criminal classification and someone has driven the car and another person has died.

Trafikverket: Passengers raised the alarm

The ferry belonging to the Swedish Transport Administration was at the point of contact when the accident occurred.

– It was passengers who alerted the crew that there were bags in the water, says Bengt Olsson, press manager at the Swedish Transport Administration.

Two ferry lines have been shut down and the Swedish Transport Administration is now trying to form a picture of what has happened.

– I have spoken to the shipping company and those who were on board, they themselves do not know what happened, says Bengt Olsson.

According to the Swedish Maritime Administration, the car must have driven through the gates of the boat when it drove on.

– The gates are on board the ferry and open so you can drive on board. Driving through them is enough if you accelerate properly, but it is too early to say what happened, says Bengt Olsson.

Will tow the car

The police also worked at the scene and have conducted several witness interviews. The car is still in the water.

– It has been searched and there should not be any more people left in the car, says Mats Eriksson.

The police have planned to recover the car on Monday.

– Then you can possibly get an answer to the question of what happened, says Mats Eriksson.
