– Sveavägen is a parade street and should be characterized to a greater degree by people’s life, rather than engine noise, says the newly appointed traffic councilor Lars Strömgren (MP).
One of the reasons why Sveavägen was chosen in particular is that there have been recurring problems with bus driving and riots on the street, according to the traffic council, which believes that many residents have requested political measures to reduce car traffic.
According to the new board, the ambition is for pedestrian, bicycle and public transport to be the hub of the city. The goal is to reduce driving by 30 percent by 2030, says the upcoming budget. Among other things, infrastructure must be built with wider cycle lanes, sidewalks and pedestrian crossings. In addition, there will be more bus lanes, according to the city council.
The route must be investigated
During the spring of 2023, the traffic committee will investigate how the introduction will take place. It concerns, among other things, which stretch of Sveavägen is to be covered, which weekends are suitable and how the closure is to be maintained.
– It is still the case that certain necessary transports must be able to be carried out, such as deliveries and transport services, he says.
