Successful spy thriller with Jennifer Lawrence: Red Sparrow on TV
The young prima ballerina Dominika (Lawrence) is left with nothing after an accident. Without income, she cannot provide her seriously ill mother with expensive medication and so, out of necessity, she trains to become a Russian secret agent. She will soon find out the identity of an American mole within the Russian secret service through CIA agent Nathaniel Nash (Joel Edgerton).
Francis Lawrence stages the espionage thriller with unusual brutality and explicit images, which primarily tells of dehumanization. Dominika, played by Lawrence, has to endure a lot: rape, torture, humiliation and constant confrontation with death. In a business where a woman’s body becomes a weapon, it seems impossible not to lose one’s personality. The focus on the emotional world makes Red Sparrow so unique and gripping.
Jennifer Lawrence faced major challenges
For her role in Red Sparrow, Lawrence not only had to learn to dance, but also had to develop a believable Russian accent. “I also really challenged myself in a way that I hadn’t experienced before.”the actress said at the film’s premiere in 2018 (via Variety). The film’s sexual and violent scenes may have been even more difficult.
However, Lawrence praised the professional environment and the meticulous preparation by Francis Lawrence, who never made any secret of how challenging the role and the dramatic scenes would be. Ultimately, the film helped the actress deal with the scandal surrounding her nude photos leak in 2014 and emerge mentally stronger.
The work was truly worth it, as the reviews were mostly positive. Lawrence’s performance in particular will stand out, as per Variety’s Owen Gleiberman:
In this film, Jennifer Lawrence shows us what it means to be a movie star. […] In every scene she brings different moods to bear, which always makes the audience look forward to the next revelation. We are on their side, but we are also in their head. Even if (or precisely because) we were being played with. When is Red Sparrow with Jennifer Lawrence on TV?
