Capes Review

If you like turn-based strategy games and are having trouble finding them on PlayStation 5, be sure to check out our Capes review article.

Capes Review: Some of you may remember, I made a preliminary review of Capes about six months ago. As I mentioned in that article, I am not very fond of turn-based strategy games. Especially on PS5, I don’t look at it at all. However, when I was sent a review version of the game from Daedalic, the distributor of Capes, I thought I’d take a look. Because the preview version slightly affected my perspective on the genre.

Superheroes aren’t just within the confines of Marvel comics. However, it is also a fact that they started to appear much more frequently with the influence of Marvel. When I think of superheroes, Jupiter’s Legacy and The Boys come to my mind. However, we should not forget productions such as Umbrella Academy and Heroes.

Capes Review

It’s not easy being a superhero in a world where people are seen as outlaws. An evil organization that took over the management of King City, the city we live in, has shown everyone with all the power like us as its main target and has taken control of the region with an iron fist. It is very clear what our part is. The heroes, who were previously left alone, begin to come together to stop this cruel company and its actions.

Although all the members of our team, who come together under the name Capes, have their own unique characteristics, it does not seem possible for them to be successful unless they come together. Even though it doesn’t have a groundbreaking story, it is ultimately a superhero story and worth checking out for me.

Although his powers are not unlimited, I wasn’t sure what the outcome of limiting the game to a certain number of moves and actions would be for a superhero who has much superior abilities than a normal person. On the other hand, the fact that it was Spitfire’s first game increased my concerns even more. Although I’ve experienced it before on PC, Capes would be my first TBS (turn-based strategy) experience on PS5. That’s why I jumped into the game immediately after the short loading time. I didn’t stop until I gained the necessary experience. I realized that hours had already passed after hours.

To explain the game simply, we have to complete the tasks given to us one by one. However, I have to say that this is not very easy at the first stage. Because even though we only have two characters when we start, not all of their abilities are unlocked. Because they don’t know it all yet. As we progress, we uncover new capabilities and see how to solve them more efficiently.

Since we are no longer on our own, we need to think not only of ourselves but of the whole team when using them. Since it is a turn-based strategy game, depending on the other person’s move, sometimes it can be more meaningful to try to save a teammate who may be harmed rather than attacking or running away.

As you play through the main campaign, we meet new heroes that create a pool of skills you can draw from before each new mission. Each hero has different benefits to the whole party. Depending on how you want to play, be it a balanced attack with adequate support or just a full head attack, we start to get to know them and utilize their abilities more effectively as we progress. This means that enemies can give you more trouble.

At first, there are only two people in our hero pool: Rebound and Facet. This duo is designed to teach the basic mechanics of the game. But as you progress, more are added to your team. Each of them has their own story and talent. Depending on the task, we can choose the most suitable one from this pool.

The general perspective of RTS games and isometric visuals are here too. In addition to movement points for moving around grid-based battle arenas, we also receive two action points at the start. We do not have to use all of these points, but it is most logical to use our limited points to the fullest in order to achieve the most effective result. This means we need to think twice before making a move. Besides basic attacks, you can incapacitate enemies, buff your allies with extra damage on their hits, block enemy attacks, apply debuffs such as invulnerability to enemies. Considering all this, you can see that there are many options to choose from.

Besides all the abilities, we also have an ultimate. Although each character must follow a different method to unlock the ultimate, we must use it to win some battles. Because this feature can cause great damage to more than one enemy at a time. It can be a great remedy to destroy or weaken our opponent, especially in the endless waves of enemies.

So far I have only explained what we can do. We also have enemies. While some attack with brute force, some with weapons, some have special powers. Your enemies usually show you what they’re going to do in the round before they attack. For example, he has to wait one turn before throwing the stone he removed from the pavement at you. Although this may seem like it gives you a one-turn advantage to defend or escape, there may be situations where you have to save yourself or your teammates.

By completing missions and side objectives, we earn XP that you can use to upgrade your heroes and unlock new abilities. You can improve your team with the experience points you earn by fighting. This does not mean that the game will be easier in the following levels. Each new mission becomes more challenging than the previous one. Sometimes more than one task can occur at the same time. Depending on the briefing given before the battle, you can go on a mission by choosing your appropriate characters. However, if you do not have the appropriate skill or if you are defeated, I recommend completing the other mission to get experience points and upgrade your characters. In this way, you can have the skills to complete the task you failed.

Capes is a very enjoyable turn-based strategy game. Even those who don’t like the genre, like me, can be hooked for a long time. With the many options it offers, you have the chance to complete each mission with different methods and heroes. If we ignore the minor camera errors, Capes is a production that should be taken into consideration by those who love the genre.
