The medical world is divided into two as to whether sunscreens are beneficial or harmful. Prof. Dr. Canan Karatay said, “Sunscreen causes cancer” and all hell broke loose.
“NEVER, EVER USE SUNSCREEN”
While some people always keep their sunscreens in their bags in winter, some run to the cosmetics store as soon as summer arrives. According to ATV News, Professor Doctor Canan Karatay added a new one to her groundbreaking statements: “Never, ever use sunscreen, it causes cancer,” she said and added: She claimed that it also prevents vitamin D intake.
Karatay, who claims that sunscreens are an invitation to deadly diseases, said, “Unfortunately, all kinds of chemicals damage the DNA of our cells.”
THE WORLD OF MEDICINE WAS DIVIDED IN TWO
Karatay is of the opinion that especially high factor sunscreens prevent vitamin D intake. There are experts who support this thesis and those who oppose it. Dermatologist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ezgi Özkur said, “Sunscreens are of course beneficial. We are now certain of the carcinogenic effects of the sun. We do not currently have any real data that sunscreen use causes vitamin D deficiency.”
Chest diseases specialist Prof. Dr. Ahmet Rasim Küçükusta said, “There are many chemicals in sunscreens and some of them are known to be carcinogenic and some are known to be hormone disruptors. Applying sunscreen, sunscreen or other cosmetics to the skin disrupts vitamin D synthesis.”
ANOTHER BREAKING DEPARTURE
Karatay has another claim, which is that, contrary to popular belief, sunlight is received at noon. Experts’ comments on this claim are as follows:
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Özkur: The risk of sunburn increases at noon when the sun is at its strongest.
Prof. Dr. Küçükusta: A 15-minute sunbath at noon, between 12:00 and 13:00, is enough.
Internal medicine specialist Specialist Dr. Yener Gün: We want you to avoid excessive sun exposure between 10:00 and 16:00 to protect yourself from skin cancer.
