Monolith Productions’ canceled Batman game, Project Apollo, was supposed to be a game based on the Nolanverse and equipped with the Nemesis System.
never announced, canceled Batman game images leaked to the internet. Monolith Productions, the developer of Shadow of Mordor, the acclaimed game of the Middle-Earth series, was actually working on a Batman game based on the Nolanverse and set in the dark streets of Gotham City. This secret project, called Project Apollo, would be an open-world Batman game inspired by the Arkham series and equipped with the innovative Nemesis System, which we would later see in Shadow of Mordor. However, this unique project was shelved when Warner Bros. objected to the existence of two Batman series at the same time.
The Canceled Batman Game Would Have Been Great If It Had Been Released
The images and gameplay clips shared by SpideyRanger about the project on Twitter reveal what Project Apollo fans are missing. It turned out that Warner Bros., as the publisher of Shadow of Mordor, was not keen on the idea of a Batman game that coincided with the release of “Arkham Knight”. Additionally, rumors that Nolan’s approval was not obtained for the use of models taken from the Dark Knight films also increased the pressure on the project.
The canceled game may have marked the first steps of the Nemesis System, where enemies’ interactions and encounters with the player evolve over time, gaining anger and fighting techniques, and the player changes based on past encounters. While it is a matter of curiosity how this innovative system will work in the Batman universe, it is stated that Monolith plans to use this system in the Wonder Woman game.
