Can you have multiple romances?

One of the coolest features in Baldur’s Gate 3 is the romances you can pursue with each character. However, there are 10 possible companions, 8 of which are romantic partners and several one-night stands. This begs the question: Can you have multiple romances in the game at the same time?

With so many great companions, the question is whether you can flirt with them all at the same time – or at least only with the specifically chosen ones for the run. The answer is yes and no:

Some companions are strictly monogamous. Others are not averse to sharing – under certain conditions.

In principle, you can at least try to get the approval of all companions and flirt with them. After certain cutscenes, you are the official boyfriend or girlfriend of one of the characters. This results in you having to end your romances with your other flirts.

But there are exceptions, which we will introduce to you here.

Multiple romances at the same time? With these companions it works!

Halsin, the druid

Halsin is the skeleton key among the romances in Baldur’s Gate 3. He can only come into your party in Act 2 in a good run. Accordingly, you need perseverance. However, he is the only character who is completely okay with your previous romantic decisions:

When Halsin reveals his feelings to you, you can respond. But if you are already in a committed relationship, he will insist on having your partner’s consent – before you become intimate with each other. It works with the following constellations.

Halsin and Astarion: The pale elf will be confused for a moment, but then give you his blessing for the hot night with Halsin. For this to work, you must be in a committed relationship with Astarion and have the highest possible level of consent. You can read how you do this in our romance guide to Astarion.

In Act 3, after potential bear sex with Halsin, if you visit the brothel with the two dark elf twins and the twins offer you sex, you can even take both Halsin and Astarion with you.

Halsin and Shadowheart: The cleric also gives you her blessing for the rendezvous with Halsin. She also openly admits that she doesn’t think he’s bad. But you also have to be in a committed relationship with her first before you can get her blessing.

Attention: Astarion and Schattenherz only engage in poly relationships with Halsin. All other companions are taboo.

Minthara, the drow

If you’re on a bad run, you won’t get Halsin and will lose most of your other companions. For that you can romance Minthara.

She has no problem with poly relationships, but no other companion wants to become intimate with her. But if you have decided on her, you can go through with possible one-night stands like with Mizora without any problems.

The Emperor

There’s even the achievement Mind Blown for the romance with the Emperor. In fact, your interactions with him have no impact on your other relationships. So you can confidently flirt from Act 1 onwards and, if you wish, give in to his temptations.

After the hot scene in the Astral Sea, a few random companions will show up and give you disgusted looks. However, no one will talk to you about it and there are currently no understandable negative influences on your other ongoing romances.

One night stands

If you are in a poly relationship, you can theoretically take the two known one-night stands with you. Both only take place in Act 3:

Devil Mizora, Wyll’s Pact Master, is becoming interested in you. As you progress through Wyll’s companion story, she may invite you on one hell of a night. But be careful: your companions will usually react unhappily to this bed story.

You can also have fun with the Harleep incubus. This is part of the quests in front of the House of Hope. To meet him, you have to try to break into Devil Raphael’s house. In exchange for information, Harleep will first ask you to undress and then sleep with him.

Harleep’s sex scene has far-reaching consequences: On the one hand, the incubus can then take on your form and your character notices when he becomes intimate in it. On the other hand, the campaign reduces the approval of some of your companions.

Share you? Never! These characters do not enter into poly relationships

Of course, there are also characters for whom relationships with other companions are fundamentally taboo. They also don’t tolerate one night stands. If you’re wondering how you can win her over, you can read about it here:

Gale of Waterdeep

Magician Gale is still recovering from his last relationship in Act 1 and is only interested in a real romance in Act 2. You can read all about it in our Gale Romance Guide. You’re only in a committed relationship after his sex scene in Act 2.

But if he has already taken you to his heart beforehand, aka his approval of you is high enough, he will immediately confront you if you get too close to another companion. My MMO editor Sophia experienced this firsthand

At least in Act 1 you can still flirt with other companions. He has nothing against a tryst with Astarion at the Tiefling/Goblin party.

Karlach

Karlach’s romance only really takes off in Act 2. Before that, she’s okay with it if you have fun with Astarion, for example. If her approval is sufficiently high, she will even encourage you to look for other employment.

However, once her quest in Act 2 has progressed far enough, you will be in a monogamous relationship with her.

Lae’zel

The Githyanki are one of the few Companions whose romance can start as early as Act 1. Once she takes you into the bunk with her, she won’t let you go again so quickly. She is completely opposed to poly relationships. You belong to her and she belongs to you. This is not up for discussion.

Wyll, the Blade of Limits

Wyll is probably the most sincere companion you can have. Although you can win him over in Act 1, his romance doesn’t really start until Act 2. As soon as he invites you to the dance, he wants to seduce you in the traditional way – as befits a hero.

His idea of ​​relationships is correspondingly traditional: If he is in a relationship, then only with this person and he expects the corresponding commitment to each other – and only to each other – from his partner.
