Massages, sauna, hammam, jacuzzi… During pregnancy, we all dream of treating ourselves to a relaxing afternoon at the spa. If certain practices are formally discouraged, others are authorized, provided that certain precautions are taken. We take stock with Dr Caroline Verhaeghe, gynecologist.
Whether the spa is an excellent way to relax and relieve pain, excessive heat can be harmful during pregnancy. However, this does not mean that one does not have the right to relax during an afternoon at the spa. All you have to do is ask your doctor for advice and take a few precautions. So, which practices are allowed and which are dangerous for mother and baby? Answers and advice from Dr Caroline Verhaeghe, gynecologist.
Can a pregnant woman go to the spa?
The spa is strictly not recommended for pregnant women, particularly in the first and third trimester of pregnancy.. During the first trimester, the fetus is still fragile and the risk of miscarriage is high, while in the third trimester, the heat may cause premature labor. “Indeed, the powerful jets of the jacuzzi are likely to cause contractions, lead to a drop in blood pressure and consequently discomfort due to lack of oxygenation. Not to mention that the water in the jacuzzi is a nest for microbes best avoided throughout pregnancy“, details Dr. Caroline Verhaeghe.
It’s the same for sauna and steam room, whose high temperatures are harmful for the mother because they cause poor blood circulation, increasing the risk of suffering from heavy legs and varicose veins. On the other hand, massages are allowed!

What treatments and massages can you do while pregnant?
During pregnancy, only prenatal massage is allowed. This type of massage has been specially designed and designed for pregnant women looking for relaxation. Through fictions and very gentle pressure exerted on the whole body, with the exception of the belly, the mother-to-be can relax in complete serenity and relieve her muscular tension. The baby can also benefit from the well-being of his mother through the secretion of endorphins, hormones of well-being.
What months of pregnancy?
Prenatal massage being a very gentle practice, it is not subject to any contraindication, neither for the mother nor for the baby. However, it is recommended towait until the end of the first trimester, given the high risk of miscarriage. “Up to the 7th month of pregnancyit is possible to have a massage twice a week but beyond that, most institutes refuse pregnant women for fear of inducing labor“says the gynecologist.
Where to spend a day at the spa pregnant?
Throughout France, many institutes offer massages dedicated to pregnant women. Most often they are called “prenatal massage”. For example, in Paris, there is Mamans & Merveilles, a place of well-being for all mothers and future mothers. Let’s also mention Gynécée, a place offering massages, sports lessons and talk groups around the maternity ward.
