In Sweden, driving licenses for lower authorizations, i.e. for cars and light trucks as well as for mopeds and motorcycles, must be renewed every ten years.
For higher authorization, i.e. for heavy trucks and buses, the driver’s license must be renewed every five years.
Do you have to bring your driver’s license with you?
When you drive a car, you are actually always obliged to have your driver’s license with you when you drive a car, according to the site Lawline.
If you have forgotten your driver’s license at home, you can therefore be fined by the police if you do not have the opportunity to prove your identity on the spot.
If you can prove your identity, it means that you can prove your identity as the holder of a driver’s license, and the police will therefore not start an investigation into a fine.
What happens if the driver’s license expires?
So you don’t necessarily have to have your driver’s license with you when you drive, even if you really should have it. But what happens if you have forgotten to renew your driver’s license, and it has expired?

Before the driver’s license is about to expire, send The Swedish Transport Agency out the basic deed to renew it. If you then do not renew the driver’s license, you may receive an order to renew the driver’s license.
If you still do not renew your driver’s license, it will become invalid, and you will not be able to drive any vehicle that requires a driver’s license.
Can you drive a car when your license has expired?
This means that you are not allowed to drive if your driving license has expired. According to Lawline a passenger car may only be driven by someone who has a valid driver’s license.
If you show an expired driver’s license at a police check, the driver’s license must be confiscated. You also risk being sentenced to a fine for illegal driving.
To get your driver’s license back, you must apply for a new driver’s license permit and get this granted.

How to renew your driver’s license

In some cases, it is also possible to renew your Swedish driver’s license even though you have lived abroad for a certain period of time.
To renew your driver’s license, you must come in with a new photograph and a new signature to the Swedish Transport Agency.
You can do this by attaching a photograph and writing your signature on the basic document that you have received from the Swedish Transport Agency, and submit this. You can also take a photograph and leave a digital signature at one of the Swedish Transport Administration’s driving test offices.
