For the fourteenth time, Rafael Nadal was the final winner in the French championships after defeating the Norwegian Casper Ruud on Sunday in three straight sets. It was the Spaniard’s 22nd grand slam title and he has his sights set on more – closest to Wimbledon, which starts at the end of June.
To be able to play the French championships, Nadal needed injections in one foot to numb the pain.
– Roland Garros is Roland Garros. Everyone knows how much this tournament means to me so I wanted to give myself a chance, and this was the only way, so I did it, says Nadal according to the BBC.
But in future tournaments he does not want to do the same.
– Given the circumstances, I can not continue to play as now, and I do not want that.
He says he will play Wimbledon if his body is ready, because it is a tournament he absolutely does not want to miss.
In the future, he will undergo additional treatments for his foot. If this does not work, surgery may be necessary – something he prefers to avoid.
– Then I have to ask myself if I am ready for a major operation that may not guarantee that I will continue to be competitive – and that can take a long time to come back from, she says.
Nadal has started the season by winning the first two grand slam tournaments: the Australian Open and the French Championships.
