Can I pay off the resignation tax? This applies in the declaration 2025

Can I pay off the resignation tax This applies in

Earlier in March, the Swedish Tax Agency’s income tax return in 2025 landed in the Swedes’ mailboxes.

Many were given the happy message that they will be receiving money on the tax, while others found out that they had to pay withholding tax.

If you belong to the latter group, you will probably have several questions and concerns, especially if you have not been forced to pay withholding tax before.

For example: Do the rescue tax have to be paid in a lump sum, or is it possible to split the payment?

First and foremost: When you have submitted your declaration, the Swedish Tax Agency will review it and then send their decision on your final tax, also called the final tax message.

When the final tax announcement then comes – and it is clear that you have to pay withholding tax – you have about 90 days to spend the money in your tax account so that the Swedish Tax Agency can access them.

However, it does not matter if you pay the entire withholding tax directly or divide the sum into several installments. As long as the money is in the account at the due date, the Swedish Tax Agency is satisfied.

This is how the authority writes on its homepage:

“You can make part payments up to and including the due date, but keep in mind that the full amount should be posted in your tax account by that day.”

The Swedish Tax Agency does not make installment plans for the withholding tax, but nothing prevents you from making one yourself.

To pay, log into the Swedish Tax Agency’s e-service Tax account and follow the instructions. You can pay with Swish and Bankgiro, but not with cash.
