Last year’s weak potato harvest has put a damper on the wheels for potato traders this year – which could create problems before midsummer, reports Aftonbladet.
According to Roger Nolsa, chairman of the Potato Growers, a strong increase in interest in the tubers has been noticed. Potato growers are noticing a greater demand than supply – and there is a risk that this will continue.
– A guy’s guess is that there will be potatoes, but there could probably be a gap in one place or another. It probably has to do with the fact that the stores don’t really know how it will go. This year I dare to stick my chin out, it can be tough in places, Nolsa tells the newspaper.
Until midsummer, a lot can happen, but the forecast is that it may be tougher for traders to get hold of the desired volumes. Whether it actually leads to a shortage of potatoes in stores is another matter, says Nolsa.
– But if it rains until midsummer, there will be no potatoes for that reason, because then there is no one to pick. There are many factors that come into play and right now it’s a bit shaky.
