In a study published recently in the journal Diabetologia, it was stated that people with high levels of the protein called prostasin in their body have a much higher risk of developing diabetes and deaths from cancer are higher in these people. According to the news in İHA, Prof. Dr. Uğur Coşkun evaluated the study on diabetes and cancer.
IN THE RESEARCH, THE BLOOD OF 4 THOUSAND PEOPLE WAS EXAMINED
prof. Dr. Coşkun gave the following information: “In a study published a few days ago, it was shown that the risk of developing diabetes mellitus is high in individuals with high levels of the protein called prostasin in their body, and at the same time, cancer-related deaths are higher in these individuals. In the interesting study, blood samples taken from nearly 4,000 people were analyzed, and after 22 years of follow-up, it was shown that the group with the highest prostate level had a 76 percent greater risk of diabetes than those in the lowest quintile. The risk of dying was 43 percent higher than those in the bottom quintile.”
PEOPLE WITH DIABETES MORE RISK OF SOME KINDS OF CANCER
Coşkun, who gave the information that it is a protein found in prostate epithelial cells and regulates salt balance and blood pressure in the body, continued as follows: “It also has an effect on blood sugar regulation. We know that it is common. The results found in this study are really important. The early detection of a higher risk of diabetes and cancer development may be valuable in terms of some preventive approaches. Moreover, by solving the mechanism in this relationship, great progress can be made in treatment. In order for these results to enter our practical lives, our country is also included. There is a need for larger participatory studies involving all societies.”
