In Cameroon, controversy and confusion around a title of notability awarded on January 17, 2025 to Samuel Eto’o. The former footballer, now president of the Cameroonian Football Federation, was elevated to a rank of dignity which is variously interpreted, during a colorful traditional ceremony in Douala, by a traditional chief of the region of the North-West. The title, the highest traditional honorary distinction in this English-speaking region of the country, was immediately contested by the brotherhood of North-West chiefs. The latter disapproved of their counterpart for a title from which they say that only the head of state Paul Biya can be the beneficiary.
