Cameroon: ‘six dead’ in stampede at Africa Cup of Nations

Tension is rising in the region Bidens counterattack

It is reported that six people died and dozens were injured in a stampede during the Africa Cup of Nations match in Cameroon.

Videos from the region show a stampede due to the large number of people trying to enter the Paul Biya stadium in the capital Yaounde.

Speaking to the AP agency, Cameroon’s central region governor, Naseri Paul Biya, states that the death toll may increase.

Another agency reports that there are children who lost consciousness due to the stampede.

Due to the covid measures, the stadium with a capacity of 60 thousand people was opened with 80 percent capacity.

Officials say 50 thousand people are trying to enter the stands.

According to public broadcaster CRTV, at least six people were killed and many injured in the stampede.

BBC Africa Producer Nick Cavell, who was in the stands for the match, stated that those inside the stadium did not notice the stampede outside, and that those in the stands were informed via social media.

Cavell adds that the floor outside the stadium is littered with rubbish and unclaimed shoes.

Sister Olinga Prudence told the AP that some of the injured were “in very bad shape”.

The African Football Confederation (CAF) announced that an investigation was launched into the incident.

The last 16 matches between Cameroon and Comoros were played despite this stampede.

The home team won the match 2-1.or.
