Boxing day traffic has started calmly.
– There is a little less traffic than on Maundy Thursday and no major queues, says Bengt Olsson, press manager at the Swedish Transport Administration, to TT in the afternoon.
In the past, Easter Monday was a tough traffic day when all the mountain travelers turned home. Nowadays, the Easter break in the country is divided into two weeks, this week, for example, Gothenburg and Stockholm have a school holiday.
– Those from the big cities are already up in the mountains so there is less pressure on Boxing Day, says Bengt Olsson.
The E4 is the busiest road and on certain stretches there are usually problems during the long weekends.
– It is the main artery through Sweden, regardless of whether you come from Helsingborg or Haparanda. There are a few stretches where it is usually the busiest, from Sundsvall down to Stockholm, in the Norrköping region and down towards Kalmar and Ölandsbron. But so far there have been no reports of queues.
There had also been no serious accidents on the major traffic routes until the afternoon.
– A vulnerable stretch with a lot of accidents is north of Gävle. There it is normally a so-called 2+1 road, with an overtaking lane. It is removed during Easter, so you can simply ride on trails there, says Bengt Olsson.
