Calle Halfvarsson makes a new venture after massive self-criticism

Calle Halfvarsson has had a few tough years out on the slopes and he is not happy with his form at the moment.
Now it’s time for him to try something else.
– I think it’s good that I’m not in such good shape right now, but more on the worn side, he told SVT Sport.

Then Marcus Hellner and Johan Olsson ended, Sweden’s best cross-country skier on the men’s side has been Calle Halfvarsson35. But the last few seasons have been tough for him. Many have questioned whether he should even continue to compete.

Didn’t have a good upload

Calle himself has been quite critical of his own efforts in recent years. Last year he failed to finish on the podium once, and he only finished in the top five in two races at the World Cup. Despite the setbacks, he does not intend to end his career, instead he is aiming for the home WC in Falun in 2027.

– Sometimes it can be the case that a really bad season gives even more motivation for you to come back and show what you’re all about. And it turned out a bit like that for me, he told SVT Sport this summer.

Just in time for the next WC in Trondheim in February-March 2025, he has started to focus especially on 10 km classic. But the big form is still far away. The pre-season training has been a bit slow for the Swede, who feels challenged by younger skaters such as William Poromaa23, Edwin Anger22, and Alvar Myhlback18.

– Now it is difficult to feel when you are in a lot of training and are most tired all the time. I walk around and am tired after the sessions and barely have time to recover for the next day before I have to go out without another session. So it’s a bit difficult to feel it right now, now you just go according to plan, he said and continued:

– Of course I hope it goes well, but I think it’s also good. In previous years, I have been in pretty good shape at this time of year and thought: “This will be very good for the winter”. Now it feels different, but I think it’s good that I’m not in such good shape right now, but more on the worn side.

Calle will run the Lidingö race

Now it turns out that Calle Halfvarsson has chosen to focus on something other than skiing during the summer and autumn. The 35-year-old has run a lot during the pre-season and now ends the investment by running the Lidingö race in Stockholm on Saturday. The course is 30 km long and ends with the classic Abborrbacken.

It is not only Calle Halfvarsson who has shifted his focus to running instead of skiing. 18-year-old promise Alvar Myhlback will also run the Lidingö race, although he has signed up for the shorter version of 15 km.

Good luck at the Lidingö race, Calle and Alvar. Go out and drive the iron!
