Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2: is the game worth it? What the press says

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 is the game worth

CALL OF DUTY MODERN WARFARE 2. One of the most popular licenses in the world of video games presents its latest at the end of October. An event outing that seems to deserve the status.

[Mis à jour le 28 octobre 2022 à 17h10] Call of Duty is a video game monument, that’s undeniable. Whether you’re a fan or not, Activision’s shooter license is probably one of the biggest franchises in history in terms of popularity and revenue. It must be said that Activision knows how to optimize its first source of turnover and attention based on a system of annual releases which unfortunately has its flaws. Indeed, for players, one game per year may seem quite redundant, justifying a fairly high requirement in terms of the content of each annual Call of Duty. However, in the past two years, Call of Duty has lost momentum after Cold War and Vanguard, which have struggled to satisfy players and critics, winded by their technical innovations and their content. A complicated situation for the American studio which is subject to totally justified accusing looks. But this year, the situation changes, since it is for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 to be part of the success of its appreciated elder Modern Warfare (2019). Does this new release live up to the expectations of fans and the press? Is its content worth it and the cost? The answer below.

For now, the overall ratings of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 are quite limited in number. The reviews are not all out yet and the only opinions on the game for now concern its single player campaign. Remember, 2019’s Modern Warfare single-player campaign was both impressively technical and engaging (at times overwhelming), and set the bar quite high before the advent of its sequel three years later. In this category, it would seem that Modern Warfare 2 convinces without making sparks, as evidenced by the rating of JVC who attributes to him 16/20 : “Three years after a memorable solo, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 signs a more consensual but still very solid adventure. No problem, here you will have your share of impressive scenes (supported by a high-end technique / sound design) with varied locations and situations, not to mention a super efficient gameplay. The only thing is that this episode likes to show that it could have been better, offering new game mechanics, soon introduced, soon forgotten. The result is a fairly fragmented experience, with a slightly bumpy pace, but generous and well done. Something to delight action fans, that’s for sure!” Find their full review atthis address.

At Numerama, it is also a more divided opinion that accompanies the campaign mode, generally noting the same points and welcoming the plot with the note of 7/10 : “What to expect from the single player mode of a Call of Duty? Nothing but a great show. And it must be recognized that Modern Warfare II provides end to end. Visually solid, the FPS developed by Infinity Ward looks like this guilty pleasure that we are happy to devour at the end of each year. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II is the assurance of living a myriad of moments of bravery for 6 to 8 hours.“Find their full review here.

On the English side, the campaign of Modern Warfare 2 seems rather to have disappointed. This is particularly the case with IGN who attributes to him 6/10. According to the newspaper, the game’s story is too flat and too familiar, reporting a lack of risk-taking at Infinity Ward, where 2019’s Modern Warfare had shocked certain moments in its scenario. “The shooting in this Call of Duty is once again of another class, allowing the Modern Warfare 2 campaign to offer a minimum of quality and satisfaction to the player. But behind each tempestuous discharge lies a disappointing story that tries too hard to copy the success of previous episodes rather than lean into its own good ideas.

For gamespot, the single-player campaign is a success. The English-language newspaper offers him 8/10, convinced by his campaign which, according to them, has a hint of nostalgia: “The success of Call of Duty Modern Warfare (2019) left a lot of pressure on Modern Warfare 2 but overall Modern Warfare 2 is a good successor.“The newspaper is convinced by the pace and tone of the storyline, while praising the gameplay innovations like the introduction of certain open-world elements. According to them, the game is a must-have for all Call of Duty fans. .

In summary, the impressions that emerge from the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 campaign are quite mixed. The game still offers a fun and worked experience, while addressing complex subjects (especially in 2022). However, it remains less divisive and original than its predecessor, and perhaps takes a little less risk in its scenario. Call of Duty remains the prince of shooters, a factor that is felt deeply in its gameplay, but still lacks tension and rhythm in its single-player campaign. Infinity Ward seems to have chosen too much to replicate the success of Modern Warfare (2019) rather than attempt innovation.

If you want to be among the first players to enter the battlefields of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, know that the release of the game was planned in two stages which extended on Thursday 27 and Friday 28 last October. Indeed, once again, Activision has decided to differentiate between console and PC players. Console players were therefore able to discover the game slightly ahead of its release on PS4, Xbox One, PS5 and Xbox Series the Thursday, October 27 at 11:59 p.m.while players computer had to wait until Friday, October 28 at 6 a.m..

To encourage players to play a new Call of Duty every year, a cross-generation console that is therefore limited in terms of innovation, Activision must (and owe the player) to offer more, always more. And the juggernaut studio has understood this well by multiplying the content in this new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. In addition to the campaign mode and the various multiplayer modes, the game will be accompanied by the release of a free-to-play : Warzone 2.0. The essential Battle Royale is therefore offered an offspring, as well as a brand new game mode: DMZ.

On the gameplay side, if we look a little more in detail, Modern Warfare 2 brings some new features, nothing too bad, compared to the formula of Modern Warfare (2019), except for new modes of movement (swimming on and underwater, climbing, mounted shooting) and new attachments for multiplayer modes. Speaking of the latter, they are multiple, managing to provide players with different ways to enjoy the game, whether competitive or casual.

DMZ is a brand new experience brought to you by Infinity Ward in Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0. This is a multiplayer game mode that can accommodate a good hundred players, and which is based on the principle of “extraction shooters”. Introduced with Escape From Tarkov, this kind of FPS offers you an ultra-realistic tactical experience, where you and your team will have to browse, search, and secure objects on an open map, avoiding other players and more or less deadly bots. A genre that attracts a lot of players, and which would benefit from being democratized by a mode like DMZ.

DMZ will therefore bring together 100 players on Al Mazrah, a fairly high number for a shooter that wants to be tactical and hardcore, and an experience that seems for the moment closer to a Battle Royale. There will of course be AIs patrolling and defending certain points of interest. No mention was made of the loot system and the objects to recover, a rather important detail in an extraction shooter. Knowing that the failure of Battlefield 2042’s Hazard Zone mode was mainly due to the total absence of a rewarding progression system, we hope that DMZ will not fall into the same pitfalls. The game mode will be available for free on November 16.

Buy Call of Duty Modern: Warfare 2 today to enjoy various benefits. This year, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will be offered in 2 versions, the Standard version which includes the game and access to the open beta (a few days in advance on Playstation consoles), and the Vault version which has all the advantages of the Standard version, plus the battle pass from the first season of the game, 50 levels, cosmetics and operators. You will find the Vault edition for 99.99 € on the official website from Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2.

We are currently in a period of transition between two generations of consoles, and Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 intends to integrate this fact into its offer. This is why you will be able to find different versions of the game, some of which are cross-generation packs. These games are therefore compatible with both console generations, just like the offer above for the Xbox One and Xbox Series consoles. You will find the cross-generation packs at €79.99, i.e. the same price as the PS5 and Xbox Series games.

The disc version to look pretty

In the era of all-digital, there are still some diehards who lean more towards the disc versions of their game. Case of collection or love of the object, the reasons for wanting a physical copy of a game are multiple, and the studios have understood this well by often offering triple A players the option of buying the game on CD. For Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, it’s a different story. It turned out that the disc of the game contains only 72MB of data and actually poses for a beautiful dummy object just guiding you to download the game from the web. Even with the game in physical version, beware of long downloads.
