Call of Duty loses almost as many players in a month as it gained with the release of Black Ops 6 on Steam

In just one month, Call of Duty lost over 145,000 players on Steam. That’s almost as many as the release of Black Ops 6 in October 2024 brought in.

How many players does Call of Duty have right now? Call of Duty peaked at 192,000 concurrent active players in December 2024. These are the combined players of Modern Warfare 3, Warzone and the new Black Ops 6.

The numbers come from the online database SteamDB, which shows the number of Steam players for all games. So those who play Call of Duty on consoles or via Xbox Game Pass are left out.

In October 2024, when Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 was released, the number of Call of Duty players on Steam increased by around 94% – almost 149,000 players were added. In December, however, the shooter lost almost 123,000 players, almost half of the active player base on Steam.

After the record release, many players’ frustration is growing

How is the game going? According to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, Black Ops 6 was the most successful CoD release of all time and was largely positively received upon release. However, many players are currently frustrated and there are several reasons for this:

Now many players on Steam seem to be turning their backs on the shooter for the time being. Under CharlieIntel’s post, players discuss what the falling numbers mean and how the trend could be reversed.

  • KLG Subonekd: “Warzone’s failure is complete. In a month it destroyed everything BO6 brought to the game. It’s time for Warzone to stand on its own two feet, no longer tied to mainline games. It needs its own dedicated dev team, dev cycle and support.”
  • ihatethecap: “Remove crossplay with the PC and the numbers for the consoles go up. Either get an anti-cheat or do something. The content year after year can’t just be camo grind.”
  • LunchTime: “You would think there would be a lot of new players joining in December/Christmas. This drop-off should give CoD some concern, hopefully enough to support their game.”
  • Recently, a world champion in Call of Duty wanted to prove that the aim assist on the controller is not as powerful as many players think. However, this attempt went wrong – you can find out exactly how in this article: Call of Duty: World Champion wants to prove that the aim assist is not a blatant advantage – it completely backfires
