call for vigilance following a dengue epidemic reported in Abidjan

In Côte d’Ivoire, twelve cases of dengue fever have so far been identified, mainly in Abidjan. One death has been reported. This is the fifth time that a dengue epidemic has been observed in Abidjan since 2008. A mosquito control campaign was launched on Friday, May 6, in the Cocdy-Bingerville area where most cases are concentrated.

Dengue fever is transmitted by the tiger mosquito and has symptoms similar to those of malaria. Joined by RFI, Professor Joseph Bénié Bi Vroh, director of the National Institute of Public Hygiene, therefore calls for vigilance.

It’s a diseasehe said, which is characterized by headaches, body aches, high fever and pain in the joints. The severe form is characterized by bleeding, abdominal pain and vomiting which can lead to the death of the patient. What I can advise is, in the face of these signs, to go immediately to a health center to make the diagnosis. »

Eeliminate breeding grounds

Dengue is a disease transmitted by the tiger mosquito and therefore the fight is essentially based on vector control which consists of eliminating all mosquito breeding grounds such as all water reservoirs after each rain, stagnant water. We must avoid slush in the houses and, in the surroundings, containers containing water, especially in our context here with the canaries, such as saucepans or even old tires. It is also necessary to weed around the houses and to put anti-mosquito grids on the doors and windows. I must also specify that it is a mosquito which has a particular biology, in the sense that it bites mainly in the afternoon. »rememberJoseph Benie Bi Vroh.
