The African Football Confederation (CAF), meeting in an Extraordinary General Assembly (EGM) on November 26, 2021 in Cairo, has supported a possible World Cup organized every two years instead of every four years. The AGE also encouraged the management of CAF to pursue the creation of a Superleague, a new competition which will bring together the best African clubs.

The African Football Confederation (CAF), meeting in Extraordinary General Assembly (EGM) on November 26, 2021, has displayed its optimism. Whether it is in relation to the organization of the African Cup of Nations in Cameroon (January 9 to February 6, 2022), that of its finances, or the future of African refereeing. On this last point, CAF has also signed a partnership with the International Federation (FIFA) for the training of the best referees on the continent.

A vote in favor of the World Cup every two years

Above all, in the presence of FIFA President Gianni Infantino, the EGM voted the following motion: “ 1. CAF supports the decision of the FIFA Congress to conduct the feasibility study for the organization of the Men’s and Women’s World Cup every two years. 2. If the result of the study concludes that it is feasible, CAF will strongly support their organization every two years.

A reform of the World Cup praised in front of the members of the CAF by Arsène Wenger, its great architect and promoter. A project which does not seem incompatible with an African Cup of Nations organized every two years, assured Steven Martens, the Technical Director of FIFA.

From a football point of view, there are a lot of advantages to this [Un Mondial tous les 2 ans, Ndlr], hammered the Belgian, who accompanied the ex-coach of Arsenal during a presentation. Because it makes his playoffs more interesting. You can keep the CAN every two years. The World Cup will take place every two years. And so there will be a big competition every year for the national teams. “.

The African Superleague on track

During this EGM, CAF thus broadly supported the proposals made by Gianni Infantino in Morocco in January 2020, including that of a Superleague. Delegates thus “ recognized the potential benefit of a Pan-African Superleague and encouraged the CAF Executive Committee to continue its study and investigations in order to finalize its plan for the launch Of this new competition. An event which must bring together around twenty big clubs from the continent each season, but the contours of which have yet to be defined.
