CAF offers financial assistance to buy a computer but few

Do you need computer equipment for your children, but you can’t afford to buy it? The Family Allowance Fund can help you get a computer or even a tablet.

Today, access to digital tools has become essential, whether for work, study, or simply staying connected with loved ones. Smartphones, tablets, and laptops have become essential goods, but their cost can be a real obstacle for many households. In 2024, digital insecurity has become a real societal problem.

However, there is assistance, little known to the general public, to help you equip your home at a lower cost. It turns out that the Family Allowance Fund (CAF), in addition to its usual assistance, can also support you in the purchase of computer equipment. However, this financial assistance is accessible to a large number of households. In fact, the CAF offers, under certain conditions, a helping hand for the acquisition of a PC, a tablet or even a smartphone.

Please note, however, that this is a departmental aid scheme, which is therefore not necessarily offered by all departments. In addition, the eligibility and financing conditions vary depending on the CAF. It is therefore advisable to check precisely the aid offered by yours when you submit your application.

To benefit from this digital aid, you generally need to prove that your family quotient is below a defined threshold – between €700 and €800 – and that you have a dependent minor child or a child to be born. The age limit for the child can vary, from 18 to 26 years for students, depending on the funds.

The aid covers a large number of computer equipment: laptops or desktops, peripherals (mouse, screen, keyboard), printers, scanners and even tablets. It generally takes the form of an interest-free loan, spread over 24 or 36 months, and capped at €600 depending on the department.

Take for example the CAF of Eure. Beneficiaries who are parents of a child under 21 years old can benefit from an interest-free loan of a maximum amount of €500. Beneficiaries who are parents of a child under 26 years old who is in higher education and beneficiaries under 26 years old who are in higher education can borrow up to €500 without any interest, while the CAF will pay the rest itself for an amount of up to €500 – for a maximum total of 1,000 € therefore.

Please note that assistance is not automatic and depends on the budgetary resources of each CAF. Interested families must contact their departmental fund and obtain approval before purchasing the computer equipment. The aim is to reduce the digital divide and ensure that all children, regardless of their family’s financial situation, can have access to the necessary tools.
