BYD sets sail – to conquer Europe

In the last quarter of 2023, China’s Build Your Dreams, abbreviated BYD, was the car manufacturer that delivered the most electric cars worldwide.

In total, over 3 million cars were delivered in 2023, but the majority of these were sold in China while only 243,000 wagons were exported.

Now they are taking new measures to speed up their exports.

BYD acquires its own ship

On Monday, the car manufacturer’s new fully-owned freighter departed from China with the course set for the Netherlands and Germany.

On board the brand new boat, which is called BYD Explorer No.1, there are 5,000 electric cars according to Reuters.

BYD Explorer No.1 is built by the Yantai CIMC Raffles shipyard and owned by the London-based company Zodiac Maritime, which is owned by the Israeli Ofer family.

More people invest in their own boats

BYD is not the only Chinese carmaker investing in its own ships as a way to boost exports.

Chery Automobile and SAIC Motor have also placed orders for their own vessels of the so-called RORO type.

China as a whole is estimated to have overtaken Japan as the nation in the world that exports the most cars, with 5.2 million units exported by 2023.

One of the factors that often sets Chinese cars apart from the crowd is their low prices. Recently, however, the news came that the EU is to investigate whether they are being unfairly favored and are to be charged with tariffs on imports.
