Are you looking forward to the weekend for personal projects, but often feel sluggish in the middle of the weekend? Dr. Gérald Kierzek, medical director of Doctissimo, explains why.
A shame. While during your work week, you were looking forward to the weekend to finally recharge your batteries (or have fun), but once it arrives, you feel even more tired and want to stay in bed. But what gives you that more intense feeling on the weekend? We asked the question to Dr Gérald Kierzek, medical director of Doctissimo.
These reasons that tire us out in our free time
According to him, there is indeed an effect of fatigue felt on weekends in many people, but this can be explained quite simply. In addition to a more intense need for recovery during the weekend (which remains to be demonstrated), the rhythms which differ between weekdays and weekends would be to blame.
- A sleep gap : During the week, we have regular sleep schedules due to work or school obligations. “But on weekends we change our sleep routine, going to bed later or getting up later, which can disrupt sleep.biological clock and cause fatigue. explains our expert;
- Accumulated stress : Some people also accumulate stress throughout the week due to work demands, family responsibilities, or other commitments. The weekend can be the time when the body and mind begin to feel the effects of this accumulated stress, manifesting as a feeling of fatigue;
- A change in eating habits : on weekends, eating habits can also change, with different meals, more frequent snacks, or overeating. These dietary variations can affect energy and fatigue with insulin spikes and bursts;
- Lack of routine: The weekday routine often provides a certain level of predictability and stability. On weekends, when these routines are disrupted, some people may feel less energetic;
- A different physical activity: finally, too much intense exercise on weekends or, conversely, excessive inactivity can lead to fatigue.
When should we worry about this fatigue?
Fatigue that occurs on weekends is therefore normal, if you are used to completely changing your pace on Friday evening. If this feeling bothers you, our expert advises reviewing your rhythm and habits: paying attention to sleeping well, eating correctly without excess and managing your physical activity (neither too much nor too little).
“On the other hand if the fatigue persists despite these lifestyle adjustments, it can also be indicative of a health problem. Faced with lasting fatigue, it is better to consult a health professional.”
