But the top 10 games ate up 61% of the money

It was a record year for PC gaming and for Steam: A total of 13,971 new games were released on Steam: But only very few games make big money, like Baldur’s Gate 3 or Hogwarts Legacy.

How much money have new games made on Steam? The site Venturebeat published a big report about Steam:

  • Total new game sales on Steam (Full Game Sales Revenue) have doubled since 2019 from $4.5 billion to $9 billion in 2023. In 2023, sales rose significantly again after a long break, and remained almost the same between 2020 and 2022.
  • But of that 9 billion, almost all of it goes to the 100 biggest new games in a year: the top 100 account for 91% of sales
  • The income is even more spread out: the top 10 take 61% of the cake.
  • A useful feature can make your life in Baldur’s Gate 3 much easier

What was the biggest game of the year? The biggest new game on Steam in 2023 was Baldur’s Gate 3. The role-playing epic earned an estimated $657 million on Steam. That’s 21% of sales when new games are released.

The other games in the top 10 were:

  • Hogwarts Legacy
  • Starfield
  • Resident Evil 4
  • Sons of the Forest
  • Armored Core VI
  • EA Sports FC 24
  • Star Wars Jedi: Survivor
  • Lethal Company
  • Cities Skylines 2
  • If you look at discontinued units, Free2Play games like Overwatch 2, BattleBit Remastered or The Finals also appear, but not much changes at the core of the top 10.

Of 14,000 new games on Steam, only 5% make more than $100,000 in revenue

How many new games came to Steam? Almost 14,000 new games were released in 2023. An increase of 13% compared to 2022.

However, only 181 of these were AAA or AA games, i.e. games with high production values.

Free2Play games only take up a small part of 303 games.

This is how big the gap is between rich and poor: Of the nearly 14,000 new games, only 700 (5%) achieved more than $100,000 in sales.
