The second season of Squid Game has taken Netflix by storm and has already broken one record after another: Not only did the new season debut at number 1 in the streaming charts in all (!) 93 countries where Netflix is available, The series also collected more views in its premiere week than record holder Wednesday.
With this incredible success, it’s almost surprising that Squid Game is already should end after a 3rd season. As series creator Dong-hyuk Hwang has now revealed, the Squid Game universe could continue after the final season.
Squid Game creator could imagine sequel to Netflix hit as a spin-off
As Dong-hyuk Hwang revealed in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, he couldn’t imagine a traditional continuation of the story about Gi-hun. Instead, he sees potential in the stories of other characters:
Personally, I see the third season as the finale of the story. I think I have found a conclusion to the story I wanted to tell about society through the character Seong Gi-hun. If I wanted to return to the world of Squid Game, it would be for other characters and other stories. Like a spin-off, maybe.
Dong-hyuk Hwang already formulated an idea for characters that he could focus on in a possible spin-off:
The Masked Guardians, for example. How did they get there? What do they do when they’re not working? Maybe something like that.

When is Squid Game Season 3 coming to Netflix?
Whether we can actually expect a Squid Game spin-off after season 3 is still up in the air. First of all, we can look forward to the third season of the Netflix hit, which awaits us on the streamer just a few months after season 2. Accordingly, the consequences should already be in summer 2025 land on Netflix.
In addition, an English-language remake of the series is currently being worked on, which will feature Fight Club director David Fincher as the creative head. The reality show Squid Game: The Challenge is already in the starting blocks with a second season.
