But many former fans now want to see it fail

The multiplayer shooter Payday 3 (PC, PS 5, Xbox Series) is scheduled for release on September 21st. It is one of the top 5 most wanted games on Steam. But the mood is down before the release: Some fans now want to see the game burn and fail.

This is situation 3:

  • Payday 3 was announced back in May 2016, but is only coming to Steam and consoles now, 7 years later, because the studio behind the game has been turbulent for years. Because the two brothers behind the studio, Ulf and Bo Anderson, are both no longer part of “Overkill Studio”.
  • Since the release of Payday 2 in 2013, the worm has somehow been in there: Payday 2 was a great success, but the studio behind it “Overkill Software” dismantled itself afterwards. Chief developer Ulf Andersson was burned out, left the company and continued to work on GTFO. The studio totally took over with zombie flop The Walking Dead. The 2nd brother, Bo Andersson, was fired.
  • Payday 3 is now supposed to be released after Plaion (formerly Koch Media) intervened with a strong cash injection and shot the ailing Swedish publisher Starbreeze new financial strength.

Payday 3 goes solo, but only online, not offline

Which decision is causing trouble now? During a stream on YouTube, community manager, Almir Listo, said: It’s impossible to do anything in the game unless you’re online.

So there is an “always online” obligation.

Here are the fateful seconds with the statement:

Why does this upset people? Many also want to be able to play Payday solo and complete the missions offline. With the popular Payday 2, it was still possible to play purely offline, although there were some restrictions and the game lent itself as a co-op title.

This is what the studio says: Community Managar has made it clear that you can play solo, but not offline:

You will be able to play it alone, but I think you will be able to connect [zum Internet] need because the game was made with the Unreal engine. It uses cross-progression, crossplay – yes I think you will need to be connected to the internet.

“Wanted to spend $130, now only $0”

What’s the reaction? The reaction is really negative. Below the YouTube video are comments:

  • “Online only and Collector’s Edition isn’t available for PC in America. I was willing to spend $90, then $130, now I’m going to spend $0. These are really great sales skills. I’m hardcore loyal to Overkill, but these past few weeks have completely changed that.”
  • “Damned. Had the game on the wish list and it looked like a lot of fun. But now that it’s ‘Always Online’ is a deal breaker for me.”
  • “No offline mode, no purchase”
  • On Reddit, players are also complaining about the online compulsion. Among other things, the console player would exclude those who do not have a subscription – such as PS Plus.

Some players reject “Always Online” because they say: once the servers are down, you can never play the game again and have sunk hundreds of dollars.

Some players are so angry that they now wish the game to fail and die. She was so excited about the game beforehand that it was at the top of Steam’s wish list.

There was exactly this debate with the last major release in gaming: Diablo 2 could still be played offline and that was important to many. With Diablo 4, that was no longer the case.

For many, this is pure patronage of the players. Others advocate “always online” as good for a game’s integrity and making it harder for cheaters and pirates:

Diablo 4 repeats a bug from its predecessor – Bringing back a controversial “feature”.
