Burundian journalist Floriane Irangabiye was released on Friday, July 16, two days after being pardoned by President Evariste Ndayishimiye. She had been sentenced to ten years in prison in January 2023 for “undermining the internal security of the State”. From Rwanda, where she lived in exile, she hosted a political program on a radio station critical of the Burundian government. Back in her country, she was arrested by the intelligence services in August 2022. Despite this presidential pardon, freedom of the press and freedom of expression are still far from being achieved in Burundi, according to several associations.
