A bursary to support local students has been established in memory of Lucas Riley Crump, a young man who died in a collision last August.

An honors student in the French immersion program at North Park Collegiate, Crump had an affinity for math and was known for his signature accessory – a bucket hat. Prior to attending North Park, Crump graduated from the French immersion program at Ecole Confederation School. Crump would have graduated from North Park in 2025.
The bursary includes an award for science technology, engineering, and mathematics and one for French Immersion. It also includes a “Bucket Hat” award recognizing high achievement and kindness to others. It has been set up by friends and family including Crump’s mother, Karen Hanson-Crump.
A fund-raising event in support of the bursary is being held Aug. 4 at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 12 Catherine Ave. in Brantford from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The afternoon of music, community and remembrance will include performances by Schmoe Bros, The Unborn Band, and Corner Pocket.
Tickets are $15 in advance and can be purchased online at https://shorturl.at/hxamR or $20 cash at the door.
All funds raised for the bursary will be managed by the Grand Erie District School Board and only students from North Park Collegiate are eligible for the awards.
Crump was one of two people to die in an Aug. 4 2023 collision at Cornell and Furnace roads near Otterville.
The collision occurred at the bottom of a steep hill with a sharp turn to the left. The vehicle went off the road at the edge of a ditch, hitting a line of cedar trees.
There were seven people in the vehicle at the time of the crash.
Avery Warwick, 18, was a graduate of North Park and had planned to attend Algonquin College in Ottawa in the fall of 2023 also died in the collision.
She was a manager at McDonald’s and played rugby.
Five other teens were injured.
A 17-year-old was charged with two counts of dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death in connection with the collision.
