Burkina launches platform to pay fines online and avoid corruption

In Burkina Faso, a platform for paying traffic tickets directly from your phone was officially launched on Tuesday July 11 and is called eContravention. Managed by the Ministry of Territorial Administration, Decentralization and Security, this platform aims to reduce the corruption of agents and on public roads.

This new platform, designed and developed by the Burkinabe administration, is currently operational in the country’s two major cities: Ouagadougou and Bobo-Dioulasso.

In practice, when a driver is in violation on the road, security officers register his identity on the platform, then he receives a message indicating the amount of the fine. No need for an internet connection, say its designers: it can, regardless of the phone model, pay this amount via “Orange money”, the application’s partner operator.

This simplified procedure is presented primarily as a time saver. Another advanced objective: it is an effective means of combating public corruption, rejoices Mahamadou Sana, Minister Delegate for Security. It will reduce the loss (…) for the benefit of state budget “.

The National Anti-Corruption Network (Ren-Lac) also welcomes the establishment of this platform. In one of its latest reports, Ren-Lac pleaded for the digitization of fines as a solution to corruption on the country’s highways.
