64 Burkinabe nationals arrived in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso on Wednesday. They traveled from Tunisia on a government-chartered plane.

They had been brought home following the wave of violence that erupted in Tunisia after President Kais Saied recently blamed what he calls illegal migrants, who come from sub-Saharan countries, for being behind most of the country’s crime.

Burkinabe minister Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré says that more citizens may be brought home in a similar way in the future.

Other countries in the region, such as Guinea, Mali and Ivory Coast, have also arranged repatriation for their citizens in Tunisia following Saied’s remarks.

Saied has also said that “urgent action” must be taken against illegal migrants.
