He makes sure that vulnerable families with children and financial pressures can go on boat trips every summer.
But a burglary in Marcus Göthberg’s warehouse can now put an end to the non-profit project.
– I spend so many hours helping people constantly and then you are exposed yourself.
Marcus Göthberg founded the non-profit project Sommarlyckan in 2014. For several years, together with his son and partner, he has ensured that financially vulnerable families with children can go on summer excursions in Bohuslän for free. A work that has been broadened and now goes on all year round.
– It started with boat trips in the summer, but now we help with everything possible. We help, among other things, to pay rent, electricity bills and grocery bills, he says.
The break-in may complicate the summer relief work
Sommarlykkan has so far brought approximately 340 people to sea. They have also created several children’s events and helped give away toys and clothes.
Now there is a risk that the summer’s boat trips will not take place. On Thursday evening, Marcus Göthberg’s warehouse was subjected to a break-in where the majority of tools, cables and other equipment were stolen.
– We had planned to do boat trips for children with the rubber boat this summer, but because of the break-in I can’t lock it up now. Now I can’t fix anything. It means a lot to a lot of people.
The burglary has been reported to the police and Marcus Göthberg’s post has been widely circulated on social media.
– Unfortunately, the police do not want to come. It is tragic because there is evidence such as large skid marks in the gravel and clear fingerprints. But the only positive thing about this is the crazy turnout, hundreds of people have shared my post on social media so it’s a big spread with people wanting to help and sending tips.
“Disappointed in humanity”
Marcus Göthberg tells us that it is not the first time that he has faced adversity with the non-profit work. Last summer he had a back injury and was therefore very much looking forward to being able to start the boat trips again. It is also not the first time that he has been subjected to theft.
– This is probably the third time it has happened. For example, I got a caravan for a homeless person that was stolen. 3 years ago they also stole my inflatable boat, he says and continues:
– It has been very tough to push, but then you are also met with joy and gratitude which gives the drive to continue. But right now you are disappointed in humanity.
