Fourteen independent local eateries in Brantford, Brant County and Six Nations are participating in “Burger Wars,” a new fund-raising campaign in support of Brant United Way. The restaurants will be vying for the title of Brant’s Best Burger.

“We couldn’t be happier at the response we received from local restaurants,” Beth Luciani, Brant United Way’s executive director, said. “All of them seemed so excited to create a new burger for this event.

“We knew this was going to be fun.”

The campaign starts in September and will be the kick-off to the agency’s 2024 campaign.

Luciani said “Burger Wars” is a wonderful way to include the entire community in the campaign to raise $1 million in support of local programs and charities.

During the campaign, participating restaurants will create their own special Brant United Way burger for customers to enjoy. A toonie from every Brant United Way burger sold will be donated to this year’s campaign.

Customers will be able to vote for their favorite burgers and have a chance of winning a draw prize donated by local businesses including HeronHead Bikes, sessions at Modo Yoga and tickets to next year’s Giant Warehouse sale.

Participating restaurants include Fume, Cobblestones, Brandi’s, Hudson Public, The Dragon, St. George Arms, Flux Brewery, Burger Barn, Sammy’s Rec Room, The Paris Beer Company, Crazy Canucks BBQ, Zanders, The Duke on Park and Camp 31.

“We would like to invite everyone to participate in the Burger War, try local restaurants, vote for their favorite burger, which gives you a chance to win a draw prize,” Cheryl Wiacek, Brant United Way’s director of development, said. “What better way to give back than having burgers together.”

Funds raised by the annual Brant United Way campaign support more than 20 local charities providing more than 35 programs.

Earlier this year, Brant United Way distributed $600,000 to charities providing a range of services including food security and literacy programs, assistance to survivors of violence, mental health workshops and resources for seniors among others.

Brant United Way raises funds primarily through company-sanctioned workplace campaigns, where the employer solicits contributions from their employees that can be paid through automatic payroll deductions.

The agency also holds events including the Giant Warehouse Sale, which earlier this year raised $150,000.
