IVO has reviewed the journals for four patients who were enrolled in BUP’s inpatient department in Västerås in 2022, one of the years that SVT has examined. The authority notes that BUP has used coercive measures as belt in ways that “are not compatible with the legislation”.
Fewer were belted in 2024
BUP in Västerås has made several changes following IVO’s repeated reviews. The management states for SVT that they have reduced the number of belts to 25 last year. This is a great reduction compared to the peak year 2021, when children were belted over 800 times in the department.
Tove Marthin, Head of Operations for BUP in Västerås, responds to the criticism that emerges in SVT’s review: “Be an extreme situation”
