Bungie’s new IP “Matter” could be the successor to Destiny 2. The 3rd person action game, which focuses heavily on PvP battles and e-sports, is colorful and sounds like Overwatch with Destiny heroes. MeinMMO takes a look at what we know about Bungie’s new IP “Matter”.
What new game is it? Bungie is known for developing iconic titles like Halo, Marathon, Myth, Oni, and Destiny 1 and 2.
At the PlayStation Showcase on May 24th, 2023, Bungie caused quite a stir when it recently revealed new information about the new IP title “Marathon”. This is an extraction shooter focused on PvP in a sci-fi universe.
But the AAA developer from Seattle has another iron in the fire and is working on another IP in parallel with Destiny 2 and Marathon, which currently runs under the name “Matter”.
“Matters” could be the successor to Destiny 2
What’s next for Destiny 2 in 2024? As early as 2020, it was speculated that the “new/old” IP “Matter” could be a direct story continuation of Destiny 2 after 2024.
After all, we know that after the current DLC “Lightfall” there is only one expansion left for Destiny 2. It will bring the loot shooter’s light and dark saga to a close in 2024, with the The Final Form expansion having what Bungie says is a “dramatic conclusion.”
However, this will not be the end of Destiny, as Bungie has repeatedly emphasized.
Secrets that you then want to use as a cliffhanger in the new game?
Destiny Universe as a hero-based action shooter: It was already speculated that “Matter” could tie directly to the Destiny saga as a character-oriented action hero shooter experience, similar to Overwatch, Valorant or Apex.
After all, Destiny has enough outstanding good and bad characters and these have been continuously built up by the developer with comprehensive stories for 7 years.
What are Overwatch and Valorant games?
We still know too little: The fact is that Bungie will venture into the character-oriented genre. While speculation points to a possible connection to Destiny, it’s still too early to make any definitive statements about it.
The “lighthearted and whimsical characters” sound more like Bungie’s new creative vision, looking to venture into uncharted territory, like a “comedic atmosphere.” The 3rd person perspective alone is completely new territory for Bungie.
This would also go well with Bungie’s own statement: “The future of Bungie games is more diverse than ever.”
Whether “Matter” is ultimately a direct sequel to Destiny 2 or represents a standalone IP with new creative visions remains to be seen. However, Bungie seems willing to venture into uncharted territory, or better said, into uncharted “matter” to push the boundaries of its expertise.
We’re excited to hear more details about Matter and invite you to share your thoughts and speculations in the comments. What are your expectations for Bungie’s new game? Do you think this will allow Bungie to achieve Destiny 2’s success?
Bungie may even be competing with itself with Matters – something some other games have never been able to do:
Developer says: Anthem was never planned as a BioWares Destiny killer – was only briefly discussed internally
