Bungie shows a new shooter after 10 years – Marathon brings a detail that many players want for Destiny 2

Bungie has introduced a new shooter that already promises a feature that players want for Destiny 2.

Destiny 2 developer Bungie announced an upcoming game called Marathon at PlayStation Showcase on May 24, 2023, which will continue the ’90s game series of the same name and is the studio’s first new project in over 10 years.

Marathon will be a PvP-focused extraction shooter set in a sci-fi universe. Extraction shooters, or EFT likes, are games like Escape from Tarkov that focus on looting equipment, completing quests, and then escaping the map.

As a rule, extraction shooters rely on PvEvP, so it cannot be ruled out that Marathon will also offer PvE combat despite the PvP focus.

Marathon is currently still in development, so a release date is not yet known. The shooter will be released for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC and will offer cross-save and crossplay.

What detail do Destiny players want? According to Bungie, Marathon should have so-called dedicated servers – a wish that many Destiny players have had for some time.

Back in March 2021, a fan on the official Destiny forum asked why Destiny 2 couldn’t have dedicated servers (via Bungie.net).

But also in the context of Marathon, some fans expressed their desire for dedicated servers. Here’s how various players write on Twitter:

  • “What we’ve been asking for in Destiny 2 for years.”
  • “Something Destiny needs.”
  • “If they offer dedicated servers for Marathon, why not for Destiny?”
  • What are dedicated servers? In video games, a dedicated server is a server offered within a game by the developer. Players can join such a server individually and independently of other players or their connection.

Alternatively, there are so-called peer-to-peer connections in which a player acts as the host of the session. In this case, the data traffic runs via this player, which is why the connection depends on said player. This can lead to lag and disconnects, which is why dedicated servers in Call of Duty are even considered “the holy grail of shooters”.

Where did the info come from that Marathon will have dedicated servers? From Bungie itself. On the developer studio’s official website (via Bungie.net), Christopher Barrett, Game Director at Bungie, says:

We also focus on accessibility and competitive integrity, which are important to us. We prioritize security and focus on strict anti-cheat measures, dedicated servers, global data centers, active community conversation and feedback, and much more. Ultimately, we want to ensure that the competitive experience in Marathon is fair and fun for every player.
