There are complaints about Destiny 2, especially from solo players: The dungeon “Spirit of the Deep” is too grindy and annoying. Going into it solo would take over an hour to complete the dungeon in Solo Flawless. The developers say: Yep, everything is going according to plan.
What is it with the dungeon?
Dungeon is deliberately made for groups – For solo players “hardest thing” in Destiny
Bungie says: In an interview with PC Gamer, Raid and Design Lead Brian Frank is squarely asked about how grindy Spirit of the Deeps is, especially for solo players trying to get an achievement.
He replies:
It was a conscious decision for us to tune the dungeon for groups. The release came as the game director announced he would be bringing the challenge back to Destiny.
The developer explains that the raid in Lightfall did not meet these expectations on day 1. Other experiences also fell short of expectations. The numbers would have shown that: the last raids were probably just too easy.
That’s why they wanted to go more in the direction of “difficulty” again.
How about dungeons? The last dungeons like “Grasp of Avarice” (suction of greed) were fantastic from the story, but not very difficult, explains the developer. Now they wanted to change that.
With Pillar of the Warden, they didn’t want to take any chances and keep it very straightforward because they didn’t want to afford another release that would be plagued by bugs.
Because the Spirits of the Deep dungeon was designed for groups, it is now deliberate that the dungeon for solo and solo flawless players is one of the most difficult things to face in Destiny 2. That was exactly the intention.
Anyway, Bungie sees “Solo Flawless” as one of the most challenging achievements in Destiny ever and wants to present it as something to strive for.
Over time, however, it will certainly become easier to complete the dungeon solo as players acquire new powers and weapons and develop strategies. Every challenge is easier to solve over time, as past statistics have already shown.
For Bungie, “hard” apparently means “time-consuming and grindy”:
Destiny 2: The best solo players in PvE have a clear wish for Bungie – “Guys, it’s absurd”
