The Petkov government has strongly condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, even though Bulgaria has traditionally had closer ties with Russia than many other EU countries.
Experts believe that a more pro-Russian government is now emerging in Bulgaria.
The overthrow of the government will also make it more difficult for the country to benefit from the EU’s recovery fund, as well as the country’s plans to adopt the single currency, the euro, by 2024.
75% of the natural gas used by Bulgaria has come from Russia, but Russia stopped supplying gas to the country after Bulgaria refused to pay for it in rubles.
The pro-Western government has succeeded in replacing gas imported from Russia with, among other things, American LNG gas.
